Bursts Excite Modes in the Neutron - Star Ocean ?

چکیده

During a Type-I burst, the turbulent deflagation front may excite waves in the neutron star ocean with frequencies, ω ∼ 1 Hz. These waves are observed as highly coherent flux oscillations during the burst. The frequencies of these waves changes as the upper layers of the neutron star cool which accounts for the small variation in the observed QPO frequencies. In principle several modes could be excited but the fundamental buoyant r−mode exhibits significantly larger variability for a given excitation than all of the other modes.

Rossby waves (or r-modes) on the surface of a neutron star have become a leading model for the oscillations observed during the tail of Type-I X-ray bursts. Their frequency evolution matches well with the observed frequency drifts of the oscillations in the bursts, and the burning appears to excite these waves quite naturally. This paper addresses the detailed shape of the expected flux profile...

Millisecond Oscillations During Thermonuclear X-ray Bursts

I review the basic phenomenology and theory of the millisecond brightness oscillations observed during thermonuclear X-ray bursts from 13 of ≈ 70 accreting neutron stars in low-mass X-ray binaries. Compelling observations indicate that the oscillations are produced by surface brightness patterns on the rapidly rotating neutron stars. However, it remains to be understood (1) why the brightness p...

Hydrogen Electron Capture in Accreting Neutron Stars and the Resulting g-Mode Oscillation Spectrum

We investigate hydrogen electron capture in the ocean of neutron stars accreting at rates 10 ∼< Ṁ ∼< 10 M⊙ yr . These stars burn the accreted hydrogen and helium unstably in the upper atmosphere (ρ ∼< 10 6 g cm) and accumulate material which usually contains some small amounts of hydrogen (mass fractions are typically Xr ≈ 0.1− 0.2) mixed in with the heavier iron group ashes. The subsequent evo...
